Remixed Recipes: Omar’s Delight

So if you’ve ever seen me you know I don’t leave home without my copy of Beachbum Remixed. Tiki and Jeff Berry are what inspired me to be an aspiring bartender, that’s why I constantly read and mix to learn these classic Tiki delights.
So what is tiki? In the mid 1900’s after prohibition the nation was awash in rum. One man in California by the name of Donn Beach invented what we call Tiki. A style of amazingly complex exotic drinks somewhat based on classic items. Planter’s Punch and the Daiquiri made the building blocks for many drinks from this era. And experimentation yielded many more. Syrups, Citrus and Spice are a common thing. But some Tiki drinks don’t even use rum or funky glassware.

Take the Omar’s Delight, a drink I rarely see blogged about. It actually uses a liqueur called Southern Comfort.  It’s flavored with whiskey, peach, and orange and was introduced to me in college where we snuck the 100 proof into practically everything.
Omar’s delight was invented at the Rubaiyat Cocktail Lounge in San Fransisco. And while it may not evoke thoughts of far off islands and jungles it does conjure exotic thoughts of long ago Arabian Nights and Scheherazade.  Here’s the mix.

Omar’s Delight

1 ½ oz Southern Comfort 100

½ oz Lime Juice

½ oz Orange Curacao

3 tsp Lemon Juice

½ tsp Simple Syrup

Shake with crushed ice and strain into a small cocktail glass.

This drink is deep, sour, delicious and refreshing. Unfortunately most of my glasses are to big. And I have a ton of glassware. So you may need to shake up a double. For more information and amazing recipes pick up a copy of Beachbum Remixed by Jeff Berry. Until next time.
